The essential planning details, all in one place.
Prices are planning estimates checked in July 2026. USD equivalents are rounded; exchange rates, seasons, dynamic pricing, and operator inclusions can change the final amount.
THE ESSENTIAL STORY
Why go
Arashiyama is often reduced to one bamboo path, but the district works best as a full slow day. Tenryū-ji’s garden, the Katsura River, quieter northern lanes, and small temples add context after the famous grove.
The bamboo path is short and free. Arriving around sunrise is less about an empty photo guarantee and more about hearing the bamboo before the daytime crowd arrives.
THE EXPERIENCE
Why it belongs on your route
- Walk the bamboo grove before nearby shops open.
- Enter Tenryū-ji through the garden route.
- Continue to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji for a quieter temple experience.
- Cross Togetsukyo Bridge and follow the river for seasonal color.
GETTING THERE
The simplest route
- 01
Take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama.
- 02
Walk first to the bamboo grove, then move north before returning to the river.
- 03
Use a taxi or bus for the far northern temples if you want to conserve energy.
